In this hands-on course, participants will be involved in the process of building a wind turbine from scratch. The process of building a wind turbine involves basic electricity, woodworking, metalworking, resin casting, and a variety of other skills. Through a combination of lecture and hands-on work, participants will learn the theory behind and how to build each component of the turbine, as well as final assembly and testing of the finished product.
During this course, participants will complete at least on 7' and one 10' diameter wind turbine and work towards the completiion of a larger 12' diameter, if time permits. Participants will also assemble and install a short tower, if time permits, or install the turbine on an existing tower, if time permits. These turbines are designed for battery-charging systems. The design is similar to, and inspired by the work of, Hugh Piggott.
Participants will fabricate the three-phase axial flux alternators, wooden blades, and the metal frame for the wind turbines from scratch. This is an ambitous course, so expect to stay busy. Participants will not take home a wind turbine. Some of the turbines made during the course will be for sale to participants by the sponsoring organization, however.
