ST 301.01 Solar Hot Water Installation Lab

Course Description

In this three-day course, participants will learn the basics of how to properly install two solar domestic hot water heating systems suitable for northern climates. The hands-on course includes both theory and installation practice. Participants will work as a group to install both a drainback and pressurized closed-loop system on a training roof.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast a pressurized glycol and drainback solar hot water system, including reference to best applications, freeze protection, configuration, piping, components, charging, performance, maintenance and cost
  • Use diagrams to describe the appropriate configuration of a pressurized glycol and drainback solar hot water system
  • Identify appropriate equipment and components needed for the installation of a pressurized glycol and drainback solar hot water system
  • Describe and demonstrate safety procedures and code requirements related to the installation of solar hot water systems
  • Determine the appropriate size and type of components for a model pressurized glycol and drainback solar hot water system
  • Determine and demonstrate appropriate collector mounting strategies, including slope, azimuth, structural attachment, piping, penetrations, and weather sealing
  • Layout and install piping, insulation, UV protection, and weather sealing
  • Install electrical components for both AC and DC systems
  • Perform an air pressure test
  • Demonstrate procedures for charging pressurized glycol and drainback systems
  • Activate a pressurized glycol and drainback system and use a checklist to inspect the installation and determine proper system performance

ST 101 Solar Domestic Hot Water

  • NABCEP recognizes advanced-level training by ISPQ Accredited training organizations to meet NABCEP CE requirements. MREA is an ISPQ accredited training organization. See www.nabcep.org or contact NABCEP at 800-654-0021 for more details on recertification.
  • 14.0 credit hours for IA Plumbing License

  • 6.0 credit hours for WI UDC - HVAC Inspector Certification
  • 18.0 credit hours for WI UDC - Plumbing Inspector Certification
