ST 409.02 Solar Space Heating Systems

Course Description

In this one-day course, participants will learn the basics of liquid-based solar thermal space heating systems with emphasis on northern climate installations. Presentations and disucssion will cover system types, heat storage methods and strategies, heat exchange methods, boiler and furnace integration, high-mass systems, system sizing, and large and split array collector mounting strategies.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Determine compatibility with space heating systems
  • Examine integration methods between solar for hydronic and forced-air applications
  • Compare and contrast solar thermal system types with specific reference to seasonal loads, space heating performance and overheating considerations
  • Use consumer, system, and site information to size a solar thermal space heating system

Recognized CEU's for Licensed Professionals:

  • 8.0 continuing education credits for NABCEP Solar Heating Installer Certification
  • 3.5 credit hours for IA HVAC License
  • 3.5 credit hours for IA Hydronics License

ST 201 Solar Water Site Assessor or ST 301 Solar Hot Water Installation Lab or ST 701 Solar Thermal Technology Instructor Institute or equivalent
