PV 065.01 Solar Electric Systems and the NEC

Course Description

This course is offered in cooperation with the 2013 Sustainability Summit & Exposition and with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, School of Continuing Education.

This course is based on Articles 690 and 705 in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and how they pertain to photovoltaic (PV) systems.  The course will also review some of the key requirements in Chapters 1-4 of the NEC, as well as equipment listing and labeling requirements. This course is intended to inform electricians of code compliance requirements for solar electric systems and will relate to the following job categories:

  • Beginning Electrician
  • Commercial Electrical Inspector
  • Industrial Journeyman Electrician
  • Journeyman Electrician
  • Master Electrician
  • Residential Journeyman Electrician
  • Residential Master Electrician
  • UDC-Electrical Inspector

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify components, configurations, and equipment associated with the four basic PV system types: direct use, utility interconnected, utility interconnected with battery back-up (bimodal), and stand-alone
  • Explain the significance of NEC Articles 690 and 705, and how they pertain to PV systems
  • Specify proper listing and labeling requirements for solar electric systems
  • Describe line- and load-side connections and how a PV system can be interconnected with a customer’s electrical service
  • Calculate voltage, current and power for PV systems, based on manufacturer data
  • Determine proper conductor sizes and overcurrent protection for solar electric systems
  • Recognize outdoor conductor and enclosure ratings and requirements
  • Summarize requirements for PV system disconnecting means
  • Explain solar electric system grounding requirements and concerns
  • Identify common code violations associated with PV systems

Parking and Amenities

Parking is at the registrants expense. It is strongly recommended that all registrants park in the adjacent Parking Ramp, entrance on Plankinton between Wisconsin and Michigan Avenues. The per-vehicle costs should be between $6-10. Persons can exit the ramp on street level, enter the Plankinton Building (Grand Avenue Mall) and take the elevators to the 7th floor conference cneter, and there be directed to their course.

The SSE does not intend to offer hospitality to persons attending courses. Please plan accordingly.
