PV 205.01 Intermediate Photovoltaics

Course Description

This two-day course uses lecture and hands-on classroom activities to teach the basic principles of PV system design and installation. Participants will learn system sizing, system layout, battery connections, safety, and basic installation techniques. Participants will size, connect, and test a small stand-alone system and a utility interactive system. This course is recommended for participants working toward NABCEP PV Installer Certification or planning on attending MREA advanced courses.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe different PV module types and their output ratings.
  • Identify and describe different inverters and their recommended uses.
  • Identify and describe different battery types and their recommended uses.
  • Identify and describe the remaining Balance of System components and their basic functions.
  • Design and diagram a system to meet the needs of case study home.
  • Explain the difference between series and parallel wiring of batteries and PV arrays, and give examples of when to use each.
  • Explain and demonstrate safety procedures to follow during system installation
  • Identify factors used to calculate conduit and conductor types and sizes
  • Demonstrate basic mechanical and electrical installation techniques.
  • Define commissioning, operation and maintenance procedures for different types of systems
