Syllabus: (PV 101) Basic Photovoltaics
Prerequisites: None
Course Description
This eight-hour course addresses the basics of solar electricity. Participants will learn how photovoltaic (PV) systems work, compare and contrast different PV system types, identify necessary system components, and understand the best applications for (and limitations of) each system type. Other discussion topics include energy efficiency strategies, researching a site’s solar potential, and where to find information about PV costs and incentive programs.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the flow of electricity and the difference between DC and AC
- Calculate electrical values using Ohm’s Law and power equations
- Interpret charges and information on an electric bill
- Implement energy conservation and efficiency strategies
- Define photovoltaics and explain how a PV cell works
- Interpret PV module voltage, current, and power ratings based on Standard Test Conditions
- Compare and contrast PV system types (grid-tied, stand-alone, multimode)
- Describe the best applications for (and limitations of) each system type
- Identify necessary components for each PV system type
- Evaluate a site’s solar resource based on latitude, sun path charts, and obstructions
- Describe how to optimize energy production with array azimuth and tilt angles
- Recognize mounting options for PV systems
- Perform basic PV system sizing calculations using the PVWattsÒ Calculator and best practices
- Describe utility net metering policies and how they can differ
- Research current costs of and financial incentives for PV
Required Materials
- Online: computer with speakers and Internet access
- In-person: calculator & writing utensil
