Syllabus: (PV 312) Roof Mount PV System Design & Installation Lab
Prerequisites: PV 101, PV 201, and PV 202 or NABCEP credential
Course Description
This 16-hour course offers hands-on training where participants will learn how to correctly design, size, and select system components for a PV array, and identify National Electric Code (NEC) requirements that pertain to such installations. Safety procedures, system layout considerations, component specifications, electrical calculations, mechanical integration best practices, and troubleshooting techniques will be covered in-depth while designing, installing, and commissioning a grid-tied, roof-mounted PV system.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize hazards related to working with PV systems
- Perform a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
- Demonstrate safe work practices and situational awareness while working on PV systems
- Size and design a PV system to satisfy customer goals, site specifications, and electrical and mechanical integration requirements and limitations
- Calculate and document voltage, current, and power values for a PV system
- Calculate voltage drop values specific to a PV system
- Conduct string sizing calculations based on given PV modules, inverter, and site specifications
- Assemble PV racking system
- Mount and ground racking systems and PV module
- Wire and test PV source, input, and output (DC and AC) circuit
- Commission a grid-tied PV system and troubleshoot as necessary
- Use electrical testing equipment (voltmeters, amp clamps, and multimeters) to measure and verify PV system values
Required Materials
- Calculator & writing utensil
- Safety glasses
- Appropriate clothing and gear for working outdoors: closed-toe footwear, weather appropriate clothing, gloves, water bottle, sunscreen, etc.
- National Electrical Code (provided)
